What is Ransomware and Why is it So Dangerous?

Think of ransomware as a digital kidnapping. Malicious software silently infects your computer or network and begins encrypting all your important files, making them completely inaccessible. The attackers then demand a large payment (a "ransom"), usually in untraceable cryptocurrency, in exchange for the decryption key.

Paying the ransom is a huge risk—there's no guarantee you'll get your data back, and it marks you as a target for future attacks. Without a solid protection and recovery plan, a ransomware attack can be a business-ending event.
